Chicagolandjoad Clubs "I thought I'd pass along a recommendation for all the Braves and Princesses (Little Braves, as well) interested in improving their Archery skills. We all know that every good Indian needs to know how to shoot a bow and arrow. Cross Bow (Ryan) and I just completed a four (4) week Palatine Park District program on Beginning Archery and had a great time. We had so much fun that we just signed up for Intermediate Archery beginning in January. It's a great activity to do with your kids (sons and daughters) ages eight (8) and older and Moms can do it too. Classes are one hour each on Thursday night at Birchwood gym and the session lasts for four weeks. You can check out the instructor's (Mike Holzer) web site at www.ChicagoArchery.org If you're interested just sign up through the Palatine Park District. See you on the archery range. Mike Holzer I am new to archery, as well as my two sons. We began to shoot in September of 2005. We have had the good fortune to become acquaintances with Mike Holzer, who has helped us grow in the sport of archery. This note can be thought of as letter of recommendation, but simply, I would just like to highlight some of my experiences with Mike, and offer it as a testimony to his dedication and passion for teaching and coaching. I first met Mike in a public forest preserve in October. I had just purchased my first bow, and was preparing for a competitive “fun shoot” the next day. I was struggling, and he simply came over and offered some positive suggestions. I incorporated a few of his tips into my shooting style, and was relatively successful in my first competition. He also loaned me a ground quiver so I wouldn’t have to bend down to the ground to pick up my arrows before every shot. He recognized my level of experience, and offered a few suggestions in a way that was appropriate and supportive. I subsequently ran into Mike a few other times, but the next experience I want to chronicle was in February of 2006. He was hosting a “fun shoot” that my son and I were going to participate in at Chicago Bow Hunters, an archery club in Bolingbrook. My son was going to participate in an earlier “fun shoot” in January, but he got “cold feet” and decided not to come. When February rolled around, Mike instantly recognized my son’s apprehension, and allowed him to shoot at a larger target than the other archers. This guaranteed him a certain level of success. Success breeds success. Mike offered a positive experience for my son. At the awards ceremony following the shoot, he even presented my son with a special pin to commemorate his first bulls eye in a competition. My son will soon by joining a JOAD program to continue his growth in the sport. The next anecdote I would like to relate occurred in March. I had just purchased a new (and expensive) bow. I had a lot more experience by this time, but I was getting frustrated because I was actually shooting worse with the new fancy bow than with my beginners bow. Mike was in attendance where I was practicing, and saw my morale declining. He came over and offered to help me. He inspected my equipment, and made an adjustment to the stabilizer so my bow would be properly balanced. He also noticed a flaw in my form, and gave me a quick coaching session. A simple kinesthetic exercise he offered to me was right on and provided instant results. Mike’s knowledge and technical expertise helped me achieve a higher level of success. I now consider myself an intermediate archer and have had a few private lessons with Mike. My goal in archery is simply to enjoy the experience, and hopefully be competitive in regional level competitions. I feel that my experiences with Mike will help me to achieve these goals. I am also confident that Mike will provide a positive experience for all archers at all levels he comes in contact with. Mike Holzer is passionate about archery and promoting the sport to people of all ages and experience levels. I recommend him to the highest degree. Tom Havel
